David visits his three older brothers encamped with the army in the Valley of Elah. Arriving to discover the entire army in great fear of Goliath, David responds, “For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God” (1 Samuel 17:26 NKJV)? David receives King Saul’s permission to fight Goliath. “Then David said to the Philistine, ‘…I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand…’ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him” (1 Samuel 16:45-46a, 50 NKJV).
In this account, we see parallels between this ancient conflict and conflicts ongoing in our world today as well as the spiritual battles that all Christians face. Pastor Kevin exhorts believers to remember that strength for our battles comes from the Holy Spirit, not ourselves. We see in the shepherd David’s responses and actions a type of his descendant, Jesus, the true Shepherd, Who was willing to lay down His life for the sheep.
