After inquiring of the Lord, David attacks the Philistines to save the city of Keilah. Hearing that King Saul was on his way to seize him, David again seeks direction from the Lord. “Then David said, ‘Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?’ And the Lord said, ‘They will deliver you’” (1 Samuel 23:12 NKJV). David and his men then escape from Keilah and “stayed in strongholds in the wilderness, and remained in the mountains in the Wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him every day, but God did not deliver him into his hand” (1 Samuel 23:14 NKJV). King Saul eventually gives up the chase to fight the Philistines who were again threatening the land, and David dwelt in the strongholds at En Gedi.
Pastor Kevin shows how David is a type of Jesus, who was also persecuted, hated, and betrayed by people that should have loved and shown complete loyalty to Him. In the same way, believers today are increasingly persecuted, hated, and betrayed as Satan continues his assault on God’s witness people. In this account, we also see David’s complete dependence upon and trust in God, even in the midst of great trials. Today, believers have the written Word of God and His indwelling Holy Spirit to guide us. Do we, like David, run first to God’s Word for comfort and guidance? Will we, like David, praise Jesus even in the midst of the trials of this life?
