And They Anointed David King Over Israel – 2 Samuel 3:22-5:5

Joab, David’s general, returns from a raid to learn that Abner had sought out David to restore peace and unity between Israel and Judah.  Joab secretly tricks Abner into returning to Hebron and murders him to avenge the death of his brother Asahel.  David publicly mourns Abner’s death.  After learning of Abner’s death, two of his captains slay Ishbosheth, for which David sentences them to death.  “Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, “Indeed we are your bone and your flesh….And they anointed David king over Israel” (2 Samuel 5:1, 3 NKJV).

Pastor Kevin shows how the law distinguishes between Abner’s killing of Asahel in battle and Joab’s killing of Abner.  He also refutes the claim that David’s curse upon Joab and his family is support for the unbiblical concept of the “generational curse.”  Pastor Kevin shows how David’s mercy towards his former enemies typifies God’s mercy towards the sinner who repents and is an example for how believers should respond to people who have hurt us in the past.  Just as the northern tribes finally repented and accepted David’s rule, so too, will the nation of Israel some day repent and accept Jesus as their Messiah (Zechariah 12:10).
