Jesus Releases us from the Fear of Death – Hebrews 2:5-16

Hebrews 2:5-16

This week Pastor Kevin picks up where the author of the Book of Hebrews is continuing his theme on the supremacy of Jesus.  Quoting from Psalm 8, the writer shows that man will again be set over the works of God’s hands.  But this promise from God to His created human beings is not fulfilled because of sin in the world.

The writer then provides hope to all by revealing God’s remedy, “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels (becoming a man), for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.”

Jesus solved man’s problem of sin by taking on human flesh, living a perfect, sinless life, and then dieing on the cross to take our punishment.  True believers, who Jesus is not ashamed to call His brethren, are thus set free from the fear of death and judgment.

Pastor Kevin covers several parallel passages from Romans 8, John 8, 1 John 4 and Revelation 12 showing the wonders of what it means to be set from the fear of death, which Satan, as the god of this age, uses to keep people enslaved to his ways

Kevin concludes with Luke 18:10-14, comparing the proud Pharisee who declares his own righteousness through works, and the repentant humble sinner/tax collector who cries out to God for mercy and forgiveness.  The tax collector goes to his home justified in the eyes of God but the self righteous Pharisee is still headed to the lake of fire because he refuses to see that he too needs a savior.
