Now established in Jerusalem as king over all Israel, David receives the prophet Nathan’s blessing to build a permanent building for the Ark of the Covenant. However, God intervenes, telling David that it will be his son, Solomon, who will build the temple. “…He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever” (2 Samuel 7: 13, 16 NKJV).
This covenant that God made with David to build a house and establish an eternal kingdom, called the Davidic Covenant, will find its ultimate fulfillment in David’s descendant, Jesus, when He sets up his earthly kingdom during the Millennium. In the meantime, God has protected the Jewish people throughout history, and will continue to do so, as He promised. Pastor Kevin challenges us to recall all of God’s promises to us today and reflect that they are as sure as is His covenant with the Jewish people. May we like David proclaim, “And now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant” (2 Samuel 7:28 NKJV).
