In Chapter 18, we see an interaction between Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro, who comes from Midian to meet Moses in the wilderness, bringing Moses’ wife and two sons with him. Upon hearing of “all the good which the Lord had done for Israel” (Exodus 18:9), Jethro proclaims, “Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods” (Exodus 18:11). Observing Moses’ burdensome duties in ruling over the peoples, Jethro counsels Moses to delegate these duties in a way that provided a pattern for the legal system outlined in our own Constitution. The model also provides a pattern for teaching God’s ways within the church and within the family. Pastor Kevin exhorts parents to diligently obey God’s command to “hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children” (Deuteronomy 4:8).
