Saul pursues David to Naioth in Ramah, but God intervenes to save David’s life. David then flees to Jonathan in Gibeah. but Jonathan has no knowledge of his father’s murderous intent. “Then David … said, ‘Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, “Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.” But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death’” (1 Samuel 20:3 NKJV). Jonathan discovers that Saul does indeed intend to murder David and sends David away to safety. “Then Jonathan said to David, ‘Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, “May the Lord be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants, forever”’” (1 Samuel 20:42 NKJV).
In this account, we see how God miraculously spares David’s life more than once, reminding us that it is God Who controls when we will depart this life. We also see how those who serve only themselves can become weapons of death, especially towards those who serve the Lord Jesus. Pastor Kevin exhorts believers to remember that our lives and our deaths belong to God.
