Having successfully driven out the Philistines, King David undertakes to bring the Ark of the Covenant from Kirjath Jearim to Jerusalem. During their first attempt, the priests fail to obey the laws governing handling of the Ark, and God slays Uzzah for touching it on the way. “So David would not move the ark of the Lord with him into the City of David; but David took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months. And the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his household” (2 Samuel 6:10-11 NKJV). King David then brings the Ark to Jerusalem in accordance with the requirements of the Law and with sacrifices and song. David’s wife Michal rebukes him for his joyful celebration before other people. “So David said to Michal… Therefore, I will play music before the Lord. And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight…” (2 Samuel 6:21-22 NKJV).
God’s judgment of Uzzah for violating the law reminded King David and the people of God’s holiness and His requirements for approaching Him, a lesson that David took to heart in his second attempt. God’s blessing of the house of Obed-Edom, a Philistine living in the land of Israel as a proselyte, pictures His blessings on Gentiles who come to faith in God throughout history and the Church today, when they receive the Jewish Messiah as their Savior. In the same way that David was apparently made jealous by God’s blessing upon Obed-Edom, Pastor Kevin shows how God intends for His Church to provoke the Jews to jealousy until they return to Him in repentance and faith in Jesus.
