Do Not Go After Empty Things That Do Not Profit – 1 Samuel 11-12

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Saul raises an army and delivers the people of Jabesh Gilead from the Ammonites, thus cementing the loyalty of the nation.  Samuel renews Saul’s kingship with a coronation ceremony at Gilgal with the entire nation in attendance.  In his address to the people on this occasion, Samuel reminds them of his personal integrity and their former rebellion against God, including their demand for a human king.  “Then Samuel said to the people, ‘Do not fear. You have done all this wickedness yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart.  And do not turn aside; for then you would go after empty things which cannot profit or deliver, for they are nothing’” (1 Samuel 12:20-21 NKJV).

Although the Israelites repeatedly rebelled against God, He mercifully delivered them when they cried out to Him, just as He does for us today.  However, sin always brings painful consequences.  On this Communion Sunday, Pastor Kevin exhorts us to examine ourselves.  Is there anything in your life that is taking the place of Jesus as Lord, Priest and King of your life?  If so, confess it, turn back to Him, and thank Him for saving you from the penalty and power of sin.
