By this Many Become Defiled – Hebrews 12:1-17

Audio link includes communion portion of the service

We begin Hebrews Chapter 12 this morning with the writer pointing to the faith heroes in Chapter 11, a “great cloud of witnesses,” and exhorting us to “let us lay aside every weight…and… run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1).  Endurance is the overarching theme of Hebrews – believers are called to experience hostility, trials, shame, temptations, discouragement, and weariness without forsaking our faith in Jesus, “Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame…” (Hebrews 12:2).  The writer also warns of bitterness, which can lead to defilement, as it did in the life of Esau who exchanged his spiritual inheritance for a meal.  On this Communion Sunday, Pastor Kevin calls us to endurance in our life of faith.  Those who endure will inherit the blessing of salvation and eternal life with Jesus.
